Why African Violets Need a Specialized Potting Mix
African violets have fine, relatively delicate roots and are normally grown in comparatively small containers. In a small pot, the physical properties of the growing medium strongly influence how long water remains around the root system and how much air remains in the pore spaces.
A medium that becomes dense or stays saturated for too long can reduce root-zone aeration. A medium that is excessively coarse may lose moisture more quickly than desired. Successful African violet culture therefore depends on balancing moisture retention, drainage and aeration.
Container size is part of the same system. When an African violet has outgrown its pot, move it up gradually rather than placing a relatively small root system into a much larger volume of wet growing medium.

Step-by-Step Repotting Directions
Watering After Repotting
African violets should not be watered according to a universal number of days. Check the potting mix and the weight of the container instead.
Water when the surface begins to feel slightly dry, but before the entire root ball becomes severely dry. Apply enough water to moisten the root zone and then allow excess water to drain.
Top Watering
Apply room-temperature water directly to the potting mix. Avoid repeatedly wetting the foliage, especially with cold water. Allow excess water to leave through the drainage holes.
Bottom Watering
The container may absorb water from below. Remove it once moisture has moved through the root zone and allow excess water to drain rather than leaving the pot indefinitely in standing water.
Wick or Self-Watering Systems
Wick systems can provide steady moisture, but they change how wet the growing medium remains. Monitor the plant and root zone during the first several weeks instead of assuming the same reservoir setup will work under every environment.
Light and Recovery After Repotting
Keep the plant in bright filtered or indirect light while it re-establishes. Avoid suddenly placing a recently repotted violet into intense direct sunlight.
Temporary slowing after root disturbance can occur. Avoid reacting immediately by adding excessive water or fertilizer.
Feeding After Repotting
Do not use fertilizer as a treatment for transplant stress. After a disruptive repotting, allow the root system to re-establish before returning to the normal feeding program.

- water moves through the root zone very differently than it previously did;
- visible fertilizer or mineral-salt accumulation;
- an elongated exposed stem develops as older leaves are removed;
- the plant remains wilted while the medium stays wet;
- root health needs to be inspected.

Pot profiles differ and an established root ball occupies part of the container, so use these recommendations as purchasing guides rather than guaranteed coverage.

Common Problems and What to Check
Check whether the container is unnecessarily large, drainage holes are blocked, light is low, temperatures are cool, or the plant is being watered again before the medium has begun to dry.
Check container size and material, root crowding, warm dry air, higher light and whether the entire root ball was evenly moistened during watering.
Do not automatically add more water. Inspect drainage and root condition. Persistent wilting in wet media can indicate impaired or damaged roots.
Light, root condition, nutrient supply, excess salts and water quality can produce overlapping symptoms. Diagnose the growing conditions before changing several variables at once.
Excess fertilization and soluble-salt buildup are among the factors worth checking. Review fertilizer use before adding additional nutrients.
Mineral and fertilizer salts can accumulate over time. Review fertilizer concentration and water quality and periodically allow plain water to move through the medium.
Fungus gnats are associated with moist organic growing environments. Check whether the surface remains continuously wet and address the pest life cycle separately. The potting mix does not claim to prevent or eliminate fungus gnats.
Persistent surface moisture combined with limited airflow can encourage visible fungal growth on organic material. Review moisture management and airflow and inspect the plant separately for tissue or root problems.
Avoid repeatedly wetting African violet foliage, especially with cold water. Direct water toward the potting medium and use room-temperature water.
Some settling is normal. Add a small amount of fresh mix if necessary, but do not bury the crown or tightly compress the medium.

The mix may be naturally slightly moist when the package is opened. Mild condensation, an earthy smell, natural settling, differences in particle distribution and variations in natural ingredient color can occur.
Keep unused product sealed and covered. Protect opened packaging from excess rain, contamination, insects and animals. For best quality, use within 2 years.

Should I add more perlite?
Normally, no. Coarse perlite is already incorporated into the formula to provide aeration and drainage.
How often should I water?

Can I bottom-water my African violet?
Yes. Remove the pot after moisture has moved into the root zone and allow excess water to drain rather than leaving an ordinary pot standing indefinitely in water.
Can I use this mix in a wick-watering pot?
Yes, but monitor moisture closely when establishing the system. Wick watering can keep media wetter than conventional watering.
Should the crown be buried?
No. Cover the roots while keeping the crown and central growing point above the potting-mix surface.
Should I fertilize immediately after repotting?

Do African violets require distilled water?
Not every growing situation requires it. Use room-temperature water and avoid softened water. If your tap water repeatedly produces mineral or fertilizer-salt buildup, rainwater, reverse-osmosis water or distilled water may be preferable.

Why is the mix slightly moist or why is there condensation inside the bag?
Growing-media ingredients can contain natural moisture. Mild condensation by itself does not indicate that the product is defective.
Does this mix prevent root rot or fungus gnats?
No. The blend is designed to support drainage and aeration, but no potting mix can guarantee prevention of root disease or eliminate insects. Watering, drainage, pot size, plant health and environmental conditions remain important.
Can I use this soil for regular garden violets?
It is formulated specifically for African violets grown in containers. Garden violets in the genus Viola have different growing habits and are not the primary intended use.
